Amid the reports and complaints of haphazard and illegal constructions in several areas particularly along Srinagar-Leh highway in sub-division Kangan of Ganderbal district, the administration here have issued an order asking the rural development department to activate their ground staff to check the constructions in their respective jurisdictions.

“As you are aware that rural development department is competent authority to allow construction/ reconstruction in rural areas as per panchayti raj act. However on ground people are raising structures without obtaining permissions from your department resulting in haphazard growth especially near highway and main roads, which not only disturbs the basic planning but can invite dangerous situation. As permitting authority RDD is not active on ground, therefore in view of above, you shall activate your ground staff and stop all illegal constructions in your areas besides facilitating people for getting permission as per law,” reads an order issued by the sub divisional magistrate Kangan, Masarat Hashim.

The order further reads that the administration shall provide magisterial as well as police assistance whenever required.

The SDM told Greater Kashmir that the haphazard construction are going on “because people in rural areas don’t know the procedure.”

He said if competent authority doesn’t process permission, illegal things are bound to happen, adding “This is why we have issued orders and asked the permitting authority RDD to activate their ground staff and facilitate people in giving permissions.”
