Surat Jagran News Desk: The Gujarat High Court on Friday sentenced death penalty to a man for raping and murdering a three-year-old girl in Surat.

The accused, Anila Yadav, hails from Bihar and is in his early twenties. Yadav had committed the crime on October 14, 2018. He was convicted for rape, murder and attempt to destroy the evidence.

The three-year-old had gone missing in Surat on October 14, 2018. Her body was found from Yadav’s house on October 15 which was packed in a plastic bag. Yadav lived in the ground floor of the building where the girl, along with her family, lived in Surat.  According to reports, Yadav had initially joined the search for the girl. However, he disappeared later and went to his native village in Bihar. The Surat crime branch, along with Bihar police, nabbed him from the Mahiyya village at the Buxar district in Bihar on October 19.

A special court in Surat had given death penalty, which took into account statements from 38 witness, as well as medical and circumstantial evidence.

The Parliament had last year passed stringent legislation prescribing a death penalty to those convicted for raping a girl below the age of 12 years and made laws against such sexual offences harsher.
