If you become a victim of online banking fraud, act immediately because quick reporting can help prevent further loss and improve the chances of recovering the money.
Contact your bank immediately using the official customer-care number or visit your branch. Ask the bank to block/freeze the affected account, debit/credit card, UPI, or net-banking access and report the unauthorized transaction. RBI advises customers to notify the bank as soon as possible.
Call 1930 immediately. In India, the National Cyber Crime Helpline 1930 is available 24×7 for reporting financial cyber fraud.
File a complaint on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal: cybercrime.gov.in. Keep your transaction/UTR number, bank details, fraud amount, date and time, screenshots, messages, phone numbers, emails, and other evidence ready.
Change your banking passwords and PINs and secure your email and mobile-banking accounts. If you suspect that your phone has been compromised, take steps to secure the device as well.
Preserve all evidence. Do not delete transaction messages, emails, chats, screenshots, call records, payment receipts, or suspicious links. These may help the bank and police investigate the fraud.
Keep the complaint acknowledgement/reference number and follow up with both the bank and cybercrime authorities.
Reporting quickly is especially important because RBI's customer-liability framework considers the time taken to notify the bank; in qualifying third-party unauthorized transactions, notifying the bank within three working days can provide zero-liability protection.
