Yes, police can often trace fraud involving a mobile number, but a mobile number alone does not automatically reveal the fraudster’s identity or exact location.
When a fraud complaint is filed, police or cybercrime authorities may obtain information from telecom operators and other service providers, such as subscriber/KYC details, call records, SIM-related information, device identifiers, and transaction or digital evidence, subject to applicable legal procedures. Investigators may also connect the number with bank accounts, UPI transactions, social-media accounts, IP information, or other evidence.
However, scammers may use fake KYC details, disposable SIM cards, spoofed numbers, VoIP services, or numbers registered in someone else’s name, which can make tracing more difficult.
If you have been defrauded, preserve the phone number, messages, call logs, payment receipts, transaction IDs, screenshots, and other evidence and report the incident to the appropriate cybercrime/police authorities as soon as possible.
