If you believe an e-challan has been issued incorrectly, you can challenge it instead of paying it immediately. The process generally works as follows:
- Check the challan details – Verify the vehicle number, date, time, location, violation, and any available photograph or evidence.
- Identify the error – Common grounds include a wrong vehicle number, incorrect violation, duplicate challan, vehicle sold before the violation, or the vehicle not being at the stated location.
- Raise a grievance – The official e-Challan system provides a “Raise Grievance” option for disputing or reporting issues with a challan.
- Contest through Virtual Court – If the challan has been forwarded to Virtual Court, you can search for it using your challan or vehicle number and select “I wish to contest the case.” The case can then be transferred to the appropriate regular court.
- Keep supporting evidence – Preserve photographs, GPS/location records, vehicle documents, sale documents, or other evidence that proves the challan is incorrect.
- Attend the assigned court if required – After requesting to contest, the system provides information about the court and hearing date.
Important: If you intend to challenge the challan, do not simply pay it without first checking the available contest option, because payment may amount to accepting the violation.
