V\u0128NH LONG \u2014 Police in the Mekong Delta Province of V\u0129nh Long said on Tuesday they have launched legal proceedings against COVID-19 Patient No.1,440 for having illegally entered the country while carrying the virus late last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The 33-year-old man, whose name was given as L.T.T., was charged for the crime of \u201cspreading dangerous contagious diseases for humans,\u201d according to Hu\u1ef3nh Thanh M\u1ed9ng, deputy director of the V\u0129nh Long police.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
However, T. was still being treated for COVID-19 so the investigation is facing a number of difficulties, M\u1ed9ng said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Dr H\u1ed3 Th\u1ecb Thu H\u1eb1ng, deputy director of V\u0129nh Long\u2019s health department, said that Patient 1,440 tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 eleven times since he was first confirmed to be infected with the virus. The results came back negative on the 12th test, but the next test yielded positive results again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On the morning of December 24, T. \u2013 originally from Nh\u01a1n Ph\u00fa Commune, Mang Th\u00edt District, V\u0129nh Long Province \u2013 crossed into Vi\u1ec7t Nam via the Cambodia-Vi\u1ec7t Nam land border at a river area identified near An Ph\u00fa District, An Giang Province, then boarded a car with five other illegal entrants \u2013 three of which were later confirmed to have COVID-19 \u2013 to return to their hometown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
T. said he had paid VN\u011050 million (about US$2,170) to a group who claimed they could bring Vietnamese citizens into the country without having to undergo the mandatory 14-day quarantine as per COVID-19 prevention and control policies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
His own mother reportedly was the one to notify the local health authorities of his illegal arrival, and T. was immediately brought to a centralised quarantine facility and tested for COVID-19.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Nguy\u1ec5n Th\u1ecb Quy\u00ean Thanh, Vice Chair of V\u0129nh Long Province People\u2019s Committee, said that in this case, the mother\u2019s good sense had helped the disease prevention and control efforts as hundreds of people considered to have come into contacts with these illegal entrants had been put into quarantine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He was confirmed positive for the virus on December 26.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
