{"id":2559,"date":"2018-04-21T06:49:53","date_gmt":"2018-04-21T06:49:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.wakilsahab.in\/news\/?p=2559"},"modified":"2018-04-21T06:49:53","modified_gmt":"2018-04-21T06:49:53","slug":"female-genital-mutilation-a-crime-centre-to-supreme-court","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.wakilsahab.in\/news\/female-genital-mutilation-a-crime-centre-to-supreme-court\/","title":{"rendered":"Female genital mutilation a crime: Centre to Supreme Court"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Source &#8211;\u00a0indiatimes.com<\/p>\n<p>NEW DELHI: The Central government on Friday told the\u00a0Supreme Court\u00a0that the practice of\u00a0female genital mutilation(FGM) is a &#8220;crime under existing laws&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Attorney General KK Venugopal asked a bench of Chief Justice\u00a0Dipak Misra, Justice DY Chandrachud and Justice AM Khanwilkar to &#8220;step in and issue directions&#8221; on the issue.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It is a crime punishable with imprisonment of seven years under the existing law&#8230;,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>The government&#8217;s response came on a plea seeking direction to ban female genital mutilation or &#8220;Khatna&#8221;, as it is commonly called, and declare it illegal and inhuman.<\/p>\n<p>The bench adjourned the matter for July 9 and also issued notice to Kerala and Telangana.
