Gopala Gowda passed the judgment yesterday  while taking exception to an estranged woman\u2019s nine-year wait for  monthly maintenance.<\/div>\n<div align=\"left\">\u201cThis delay in  adjudication by the family court is not only against human rights but  also against the basic embodiment of dignity of an individual,\u201d the  bench said, adding that in such proceedings, a husband cannot resort to  \u201csubterfuges to deprive\u201d his estranged wife of the benefit of \u201cliving  with dignity\u201d. <\/div>\n<div align=\"left\">The court said the  \u201csolemn pledge at the time of marriage\u201d and the statutory law that  governs the field make it an \u201cobligation\u201d for a man to see that his wife  \u201cdoes not become a destitute (or) a beggar\u201d.<\/div>\n<div align=\"left\">\u201cIn fact, it is  the sacrosanct duty to render the financial support even if the husband  is required to earn money with physical labour, if he is able-bodied,\u201d  Justice Misra, writing the judgment, said.<\/div>\n<div align=\"left\">The bench  dismissed an appeal filed by a husband against a Rajasthan High Court  order directing him to pay Rs 4,000 as monthly maintenance to his  estranged wife and their child. <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"fb-background-color\">\n\t\t\t  <div \n\t\t\t  \tclass = \"fb-comments\" \n\t\t\t  \tdata-href = \"https:\/\/www.wakilsahab.in\/news\/upkeep-of-wife-sacred-duty-sc\/\"\n\t\t\t  \tdata-numposts = \"5\"\n\t\t\t  \tdata-lazy = \"true\"\n\t\t\t\tdata-colorscheme = \"light\"\n\t\t\t\tdata-order-by = \"social\"\n\t\t\t\tdata-mobile=true>\n\t\t\t  <\/div><\/div>\n\t\t  <style>\n\t\t    .fb-background-color {\n\t\t\t\tbackground:  !important;\n\t\t\t}\n\t\t\t.fb_iframe_widget_fluid_desktop iframe {\n\t\t\t    width: 100% !important;\n\t\t\t}\n\t\t  <\/style>\n\t\t  ","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>New Delhi, July 16: The Supreme Court has ruled that it is a husband\u2019s \u201csacrosanct duty\u201d to support his estranged wife financially and asked family courts to deal firmly with those who adopt delaying tactics to avoid paying maintenance.
