WASHINGTON \u2014 The Supreme Court on Monday \nallowed the Trump administration to move forward with plans to deny \ngreen cards to immigrants who are thought to be likely to make even \noccasional and minor use of public benefits like Medicaid, food stamps \nand housing vouchers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The vote was 5 to 4, with the court\u2019s conservative justices in the majority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The court\u2019s brief order gave no reasons for lifting\npreliminary injunctions that had blocked the new program. Challenges to the\nprogram will continue to move forward in courts around the nation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The administration announced in August that it would\nrevise the so-called public charge rule, which allows officials to deny\npermanent legal status, also known as a green card, to immigrants who are\nlikely to need public assistance. In the past, only substantial and sustained\nmonetary help or long-term institutionalization counted, and fewer than 1\npercent of applicants were disqualified on public-charge grounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The administration\u2019s revised rule broadened the criteria to include \u201cnoncash benefits providing for basic needs such as housing or food\u201d used in any 12 months in a 36-month period. Use of two kinds of benefits in a single month counts as two months, and so on. <\/p>\n
