New Delhi:<\/strong> The Supreme Court sought Monday the \nresponse from the Maharashtra government on a plea by \ngangster-turned-politician Arun Gawli challenging the life term awarded \nto him in the 2008 murder of Shiv Sena corporator Kamlakar Jamsandekar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Jamsandekar was shot dead in his house March 2, 2007 by two persons, \nallegedly hired by associates of Gawli who was the then sitting MLA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Gawli\u2019s appeal challenging the last month verdict of the Bombay High \nCourt, which had upheld the life term awarded to him by a trial court in\n the case, came up for hearing before a bench comprising Justices R \nBanumathi and AS Bopanna. The bench agreed to hear the appeal and issued\n notice to the state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The high court had December 9, 2019 upheld Gawli\u2019s conviction and \nlife term awarded to him by trial court under various provisions of the \nMaharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA). Besides Gawli, it \nhad also upheld the conviction and sentence imposed on several other \naccused in the case by the trial court in August 2012.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThe involvement of accused one Arun Gawli in the murder of Kamalakar\n Jamsandekar has been proved by the prosecution beyond reasonable \ndoubt,\u201d the high court had said in its verdict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n According to the prosecution, Jamsandekar was murdered at the behest \nof Gawli and the chargesheet filed by the police in the trial court had \nsaid that Gawli gang was allegedly paid Rs 30 lakh for killing the Sena \ncorporator over a land deal in suburban Mumbai.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Gawli, arrested May 21, 2008, is currently lodged in jail.<\/p>\n
