Men to return marriage certificates to raise awareness about men’s rights
NAGPUR: Even as writers, actors and directors are protesting the growing intolerance in the country by returning the awards they have received, men’s rights activists from the city are considering returning their marriage certificates to the family court. They are planning to do this on the occasion of International Men’s Day that falls on November 19 citing total loss of confidence in the executive, judiciary and legislature.
At least 50 members of the men’s rights organisation Save Indian Family Foundation (SIFF) have agreed to return marriage certificates, along with memorabilia like photographs. They are doing this in protest of the complete neglect of men’s issues by all the governments over the years.
“Several organisations have given proof of the atrocities that Indian men go through within the institution of marriage. Laws that are skewed to be favourable to women make matters worse,” said SIFF president Rajesh Vakharia. He gave the example of Domestic Violence Act, Dowry Act, section 498A of the Indian Penal Code and rape laws among the ones that are unfairly inclined towards women.
Vakharia said that while around 50 members of the organisation from Nagpur have agreed to participate in this unique protest adding that many others from other cities across the country are expected to join in by this weekend. “We have conveyed our problems and the reasons behind them to subsequent state and union governments, none of who did anything to solve our problems. None of the liberals ever considered men’s rights as important issues. Nobody returned their literary awards after the UPA government arrested 350,000 innocent men in 10 years at just one word of a woman,” he said.
