Delhi court on Tuesday handed the death sentence to one of the two persons who were convicted of murder in the decades-old 1984 anti-Sikh riots case. The other convict was served a life term in prison.

This is one of the several 1984 riots cases that a Special Investigation Team (SIT), that was constituted in 2015, took up after they were shut by the Delhi Police earlier.

Following the assassination of late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, over 3,000 Sikhs were killed across the country, with the most being killed in Delhi.

Convict Yashpal Singh, who was accused of killing two persons during the anti-Sikh riots in Delhi’s Mahipalpur area, was given the death sentence. The other convict, Naresh Sherawat, will be serving a life term in prison.

This is the first time a convict has been handed the death sentence in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots after the cases were reopened by the SIT in 2015.

Both convicts have also been fined with Rs 35 lakh each.

The verdict was pronounced in Tihar Jail instead of the court, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police Kumar Gyanesh was quoted as saying by ANI.

Punjab Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh welcomed the verdict and said justice was finally served in the case.

He tweeted, “Welcome the first conviction by a Delhi court in the 1984 riots case. Justice has finally been meted out to the perpetrators of the heinous crimes. Hope the others involved in the attacks are also soon brought to book for their horrendous and inhuman acts.”

Union cabinet minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal wrote on Twitter, “They killed! They burnt! They raped! Today they hang!! I thank Waheguru for giving Sikhs a ray of hope in today’s verdict against two culprits of #1984SikhGenocide & pray for a similar punishment for Sajjan, Tytler, & their partners in crimes against Sikhs!!”

Today, the justice has been delivered to 2 culprits of #1984SikhGenocide because of the efforts of NDA govt. I thank PM Narendra Mod Ji for setting up SIT in 2015 & reopening the case closed by Delhi Police in 1994. We will not rest till the last murderer is brought to justice.

On November 14, the court had convicted Singh and Sherawat for killing the two men here during the 1984 anti-Sikh riots — the first conviction in the cases reopened by the SIT.

The Delhi Police had closed the case in 1994 for want of evidence. However, a Special Investigation Team on the riots reopened it.
