The Legal Rights Observatory (LRO), a legal rights group affiliated to RSS, has threatened to approach the Meghalaya High Court if the district administration fails to initiate action against people who are responsible for the destruction of a worship place of the Khasi traditional faith at Khongthong village in Sohra on June this year.

Afre seeking intervention to remove the Bible from Shillong Civil Hospital and other hospitals run by the State Government, the legal rights group had dashed another email to the Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Police of East Khasi Hills including Sub Divisional Officer (SDO) of Sohra asking for stringent action against people who responsible for destruction of the worship place.

It may be mentioned the email is a reminder to the District heads on the incident that had taken place on June 1 which they had requested to initiate action against those who attacked and vandalized holy religious place of worship of Niam Khasi faith at Khongthong village under Sohra Police Station.

The LRO, in its statement, stated that it is unfortunate that no civil or police authority to whom they had approached had spared time to reply to their email. “We had requested the authorities to immediately act upon our earlier email to nip the demon of radical religious elements blooming in Meghalaya so that future of Meghalaya could be secured,” the organisation stated in a statement.

The complaint said that in a state like Meghalaya, where almost 25% of the population is non- Christian, extreme Christianization of government apparatus is alarming. The complaint said that many government health facilities are actually converted to Christian religious places by posting, pasting Bible verses, Bible copies and Jesus Christ photos which is and very much objectionable with reference to principle of secularism guaranteed by Indian Constitution.

“Unfortunately, instead of acting on our email request, a high ranking Meghalaya government official was threatening LRO of legal action for spreading communal hatred. We have taken serious note of the statements made by that government official and we will write letter to Meghalaya Governor and central government in this regard,” the letter said.
